Installing

You need a ZXP installer first. Adobe retired their Extension Manager and never replaced it, so .zxp files aren't double-clickable. Grab the free ZXP Installer — it takes about thirty seconds, and it's the same tool used for every third-party AE panel.

  1. Install ZXP Installer (free).
  2. Unzip the download and drag StutterMachine.zxp onto the installer.
  3. Restart After Effects.
  4. Open it from Window → Extensions → Stutter Machine.
  5. Paste your key into the panel footer to unlock (needs internet just this once). Free until then.

Questions

My installer says "unknown publisher."
Expected. The panel is signed with a self-signed certificate, which is normal for independent tools — Adobe only removes that warning for certificates that cost a few hundred a year. Install it anyway.
What does the free version actually do?
Everything, capped at five stutters per pass. Enough to cut a section and see whether you like it on real footage.
Which versions of After Effects?
2019 through 2026, Mac and Windows.
Does it need an internet connection?
Once, to activate your key. After that it works offline — it only checks in again about once a month, and keeps working if you're off the grid when it does.
Will it wreck my project?
Preview shows you exactly what it'll do before it touches anything, one Cmd+Z undoes an entire pass, and "Remove mine" deletes only what the panel made.
