Installing
You need a ZXP installer first. Adobe retired their Extension Manager and never replaced it, so .zxp files aren't double-clickable. Grab the free ZXP Installer — it takes about thirty seconds, and it's the same tool used for every third-party AE panel.
- Install ZXP Installer (free).
- Unzip the download and drag StutterMachine.zxp onto the installer.
- Restart After Effects.
- Open it from Window → Extensions → Stutter Machine.
- Paste your key into the panel footer to unlock (needs internet just this once). Free until then.

One key, one payment, no subscription. Works on all your machines — laptop and tower, same key.
Questions
- My installer says "unknown publisher."
- Expected. The panel is signed with a self-signed certificate, which is normal for independent tools — Adobe only removes that warning for certificates that cost a few hundred a year. Install it anyway.
- What does the free version actually do?
- Everything, capped at five stutters per pass. Enough to cut a section and see whether you like it on real footage.
- Which versions of After Effects?
- 2019 through 2026, Mac and Windows.
- Does it need an internet connection?
- Once, to activate your key. After that it works offline — it only checks in again about once a month, and keeps working if you're off the grid when it does.
- Will it wreck my project?
- Preview shows you exactly what it'll do before it touches anything, one Cmd+Z undoes an entire pass, and "Remove mine" deletes only what the panel made.
